Phonics and reading
In school we teach phonics using the nationally recognised 'Letters and Sounds' programme. Once children have a secure knowledge of letter/sound correspondence and can blend words confidently, they access our Book Banded reading scheme. We use a wide variety of reading schemes (including Oxford Reading Tree, Wolf Hill and Rigby Rocket), which is designed to give children experience of a variety of reading genres. There are fiction and non-fiction books within each level.
Once children can read fluently and with a good understanding, they self-select books for independent reading from their classroom library.
In addition to this, pupils are encouraged to read at least five times a week at home. These home reads should be recorded by parents in their children's reading record book, which are monitored regularly by staff.
